Body Doubling, With a Twist

September 23, 2026•3 min read

Sometimes the hardest part of getting something done is simply getting started.

You know what you need to do. You may even want to do it. But somehow you've reorganized a drawer, checked your email three times, made another cup of coffee, and decided that right now might be the perfect time to research something completely unrelated.

If you have ADHD — or just a human brain that occasionally resists doing the thing it's supposed to do — this may sound familiar.

That's where body doubling can help.

What Is Body Doubling?

Body doubling is pretty simple: you work on your own task while someone else is working alongside you.

You don't have to be working on the same thing. In fact, you probably aren't. One person might be writing a paper. Someone else might be paying bills. Another might be answering emails, folding laundry, studying for a test, organizing a closet, or finally tackling the project that's been sitting untouched for three weeks.

There is something surprisingly powerful about knowing that other people are working too. For many people with ADHD, that little bit of external structure can make it easier to start, stay focused, and keep going.

Adding a Twist

I've been hosting free virtual body doubling sessions through Real Focus for a while now. They work well, but recently I started thinking about what could make them even better.

I wanted to keep the part that works: dedicated time, other people present, and a little accountability. But I also wanted to add connection.

So we're adding a twist.

At the beginning of our sessions, I'll throw out a question or prompt for anyone who wants to participate. It might be:

What's something you've been procrastinating on that will probably take less than 15 minutes?

Or:

If you could magically finish one thing before tomorrow morning, what would it be?

And sometimes it may have absolutely nothing to do with productivity:

What's one tiny thing that made you happy this week?

During our breaks, we'll have another question, conversation starter, or little challenge before everyone heads back to work.

Participation is always optional. If you just want to show up, turn off your camera, and get your stuff done, that works too.

Why Add This?

Because productivity isn't only about productivity.

Connection matters. Fun matters. Feeling like you belong somewhere matters.

And sometimes the little spark that helps us tackle something difficult isn't another productivity strategy. It's laughing with someone for two minutes, hearing that someone else has been putting off their laundry for four days too, or simply realizing:

Oh good. It's not just me.

Then we get back to work.

What Can You Work On?

Almost anything.

Homework. Emails. Paperwork. Laundry. Applications. Cleaning. Studying. Planning. Expense reports. Organizing photos. Making phone calls. Writing the thing you've been avoiding writing.

Bring the task that your brain keeps saying, "I'll do that later."

You don't have to be a Real Focus coaching client. You don't have to have an ADHD diagnosis. And you don't have to explain what you're working on.

Just bring something you want to get done.

We'll provide the time, the structure, the company — and now, a little fun too.

Come get something done with us.
